Warhol at Rockwell!!

Such an incredible thing happened to Beth and I at the museum last Thursday! (Yes, aside from just about everything else that is going on at NRM...) James Warhol was visiting the museum during our Days In The Arts tours, and we were introduced to him!

We couldn't believe it: to have a member of the legendary Warhol family touring Rockwell's works was really an incredible thing to behold. Mr. Warhol said he felt dwarfed by Rockwell's wonder, and that he has always looked up to Rockwell's talent and ability. It seems that even the great feel surpassed by those they dub still greater. What a humbling yet empowering discovery to hear that your own artistic heroes have their own idols! It humanizes our heroes while boosting our own confidence that someday we might also stand as artistic role models for younger generations. (The latter was especially true for Beth and I when Mr. Warhol took the time to ask us about our own artistic interests and goals, and to compliment us on our Days In The Arts tour-giving!) So cool.

My Time at NRM so far

My internship at the Norman Rockwell Museum is going by so quickly and I have enjoyed my time here immensely.  The exposure to the inner workings of the museum is a constant surprise and such a growth experience for me.  It has bridged the gap between my theoretical training as an art historian and the practical application of that knowledge.

I’ve been involved in some really interesting projects since I started interning at the NRM.  Mainly, I have been doing research on incorporating mobile technology at the museum through either a Smartphone application or a QR code.  I have learned a lot in this project and it has thrown me into contact with many different departments of the museum which I value as I cement my future career path.  It has also been a struggle at points since I’m not very technologically inclined (I still own a Walkman).  However, the staff here has been so helpful in guiding me and it is this collaborative type of work which has enriched my experience here.

One of the greatest pleasures for me is to take pictures of the events.  As a photographer, this opportunity has shaped a new way for me to look through the lens.  I try to capture the natural moments of interaction between people when they are unaware of the camera.  It is in those genuine moments that the true nature of what NRM has to offer breaks through.

Here are some recent images I took at Baseball Day (July 2nd) where there were several engaging speakers, art activities, and plenty of sun and grass to play catch.

Having The Best Time

Hey everybody at NRM! Just figured I'd say a few things about my experience so far to sort of start things off... :)

I'VE BEEN HAVING THE BEST TIME at The Norman Rockwell Museum. I've made new, awesome friends, and I can't believe that the stuff I do there can be called "work..." I've learned a lot about Rockwell and the museum's property from giving gallery and site tours, and I've had invaluable exposure to Rockwell's models and NRM's guest illustrators and speakers. Though I think, most importantly, I've been learning a lot about myself: how I can choose present myself publicly as an educator and as an artist.

All in all, I can't wait to see where the rest of my summer at NRM takes me... See you guys again tomorrow morning!
